Think about how much time you spend on your bed. Not counting the 6-8 hours of sleep, the bed is where you go to after a long day of work, sick days or even when you’re just feeling too lazy to do anything.
For some people, their beds might be the most used piece of furniture in their home. That makes it very important to make sure if they’re being cleaned enough. Imagine the amount of dust, sweat, germs, dead skin cells that may get accumulated in your bed due to the constant contact with your skin!
1. Vacuum Out The Dust
A hand vacuum (preferably with brush attachment) works the best to get rid of all the dust particles, strands of hair, crumbs or lint that might have seeped into your mattress over time.
Remove the bedsheets and first vacuum the top of the mattress then the sides. Next, flip the mattress or stack it up against a wall to clean the bottom of the mattress.
2. Wash Out The Stains
You’ll probably notice that you’ve got some stains on your mattress or that it’s emitting an odor. You can use a spray bottle to get these stains out.
One thing to remember is to not get the mattress too wet as that can form mildew.
1. Lightly spray a small amount of water on the stain.
2. As the cleaning agent, you can use vinegar(which is an amazing cleaner), baking soda or a mild fabric solution. Spray the cleaning agent on the stain (just enough to cover the stain). Let it sit for a few minutes.
Tip: Use vinegar combined with water for stubborn stains and use baking soda for urine stains or bad odor.
3. Take a clean rag and scrub the stain out gently. Don’t scrub too harshly as that get just cause the stain to settle deeper.
4. After you’ve got the stain out wipe out the excess cleaning solution with a damp cloth.
5. Wet foam mattresses are a big no-no, so let’s get to drying that clean mattress as soon as we can! You can use a table fan or a hand dryer you can use it.
Tip: After the cleaning process is over, leave the mattress out in the open overnight. This will further help with the odor and the sunlight in the morning will also help kill harmful bacteria.
3. Disinfect And Sanitize
This step is important to keep your mattress clean and fresh. If you’re prone to allergies or if you’re sick very often, one of the reasons could be your mattress and sanitizing your mattress every once in a while can prevent germs and bacteria from spreading.
You can follow any of these simple ways after vacuuming or cleaning your mattress.
1. Steam cleaning: If you’ve got dust mites in your mattress this method can help with that. You can use a hand steamer to cover all the mattress surface. Again, you can’t get the mattress very wet so to avoid this make sure to steam only in short bursts and not continuously. Dry the mattress after steaming.
2. Antibacterial spray: You can choose a commercial antibacterial spray that does not contain bleach. Spray the solution on all sides of the mattress and let it sit for five minutes. Then use a damp cloth to wipe out the solution from the surface of the mattress. Let it dry after the solution is out.
3. Vodka: Don’t worry you don’t have to buy the kind of expensive ones you do for drinking! Any vodka can work as a disinfectant. Pour some vodka into a spray bottle and lightly spray all the sides of the mattress. Make sure you don’t soak the mattress. Once you’re done, just allow the mattress to dry out completely.
Preventing Future Stains and Maintaining a Memory Foam Mattress
All you have to do to ensure a long life for your mattress and happy nights for you is to follow these simple dos and don’ts.
1. Cleaning your bed sheets is not enough, clean your mattress at least twice every year.
2. Memory foam mattresses are highly absorbent. Use waterproof bed covers or mattress protectors to avoid stains seeping into your mattress.
3. Deodorize the mattress by leaving it out in the sun every few months.
4. Do not use bleach to clean the mattress and make sure the cleaning agents you use do not contain bleach.
5. Make sure your mattress is placed on a firm and solid structure. The bed base should be as little spaced as possible.
6. You might have noticed that your mattress gets saggy on the spot where you usually sleep. To avoid this and to use the mattress up to its potential, move, rotate and flip the mattress every once in a while.
7. Make sure to change your sheets and covers regularly and vacuum the mattress at least once in 3 months.
8. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions on the tag or the container the mattress came in. These instructions can also help you decide how to clean your mattress.
9. Like we’ve said before, foam mattresses are super absorbent so its best to get the stains out before they have a chance to seep into the mattress.
10. If even after trying all the cleaning processes, your mattress is giving off a bad odor or if you feel stuffy and itchy while sleeping its best to replace the mattress as it could be heavily infected from the inside and affect you adversely.
11. Watch out for bed bugs and dust mites and get rid of them as soon as possible. Discard the mattress if the infestation is too much.
